Kitchens are a nebulousness. Just like our ever-expanding universe, the amount of stuff that winds up in my kitchen is ever-growing. The kitchen in the Oeth house is small, just a little larger than a galley, so it doesn’t stick a lot for our counters to get cluttered. However, if I got a sledgehammer and took out a wall or two and created a huge kitchen and great room, I can guarantee you that, given a week or so, we’d have newly expanded counters buried under more layers of line. After watching HGTV, new countertops enter my dreams, but until we can keep the Formica clear of clutter, I’m not putting our household money there. If we’re spending granite-configuration money, it’s going to show. Right now, I could have solid gold countertops and you wouldn’t know it. All 24 karats would be under layers of school papers, junk post, coupons and such. You know the 80-20 rule, which holds that 80 percent of your stuff you use 20 percent of the time. It ought to be known as the 90-10 decree or the 99-1 rule when it comes to kitchens. Our cabinets are getting cleaned out this weekend, because the round Tupperware bowls and square lids that match nothing have charmed over to the point that pots and pans have taken up residence inside the oven and on top of the range. There are also the things that only come out once a year, at best, such as the Christmas tree Take form-O mold. When molding lime gelatin, sliced pears and Maraschino cherries into a wobbly Christmas tree, it is marvelous, but how many times does that unusually occur. The Magic Bullet one with Mick and Mimi whipping up muffins, chicken salad and Margaritas — we watched that one over and over, without buying a Magic Bullet. But we did reckon about it. Then I see a $1,400 Thermomix online — a food processor/blender with a heating element and a scale. We’re saving for college, so I don’t see $1,400 in the budget for the latest wonder appliance that would sit in the cabinets next to the Cuisinart that juliennes carrots and kneads bread dough. Real now, the Cuisinart probably has cobwebs on it as you don’t need a food processor if you’re ordering a pizza. We’ve been discussing shelves to hold some of the clutter and the seldom-used things that eat up bureau space. One school of thought is to build things to hold more things, and the other, the one I want to enroll in, is to just get rid of some of the things, and then I won’t need more cabinet space.
